Scalp Micropigmentation in Toowoomba: Density, Hairline or Scar Camouflage? How to Know Which SMP Option Suits You

By the Body Toowoomba team, with SMP specialist Jason · Toowoomba, QLD

If you've been noticing more scalp in the mirror than you'd like, you're not alone, and you're not out of options. Thinning, patchiness and pattern baldness are things a lot of people quietly put up with for years.

Some look into hair transplants and decide surgery isn't for them. Others have already had a transplant and are left with a scar they'd rather not see.

Scalp micropigmentation (SMP) is a non-surgical option that can give you the look of a fuller, healthier head of hair, without surgery, medication or downtime. At Body Toowoomba, all our SMP is done by Jason, our SMP specialist, for clients from Toowoomba, the Darling Downs, South West QLD and beyond.

The question we hear most is simple: "Which type of SMP do I actually need?" Let's walk through it.

Key takeaways

  • SMP is a non-surgical scalp tattoo that mimics natural hair follicles. No surgery, no medication and zero downtime: most people go back to work the same day.

  • There are three main options: density (thinning hair), hairline recreation (receding hairline or baldness) and scar & donor area camouflage (transplant, injury or surgery scars).

  • A typical package is 2–3 sessions spaced 7–10 days apart, and includes aftercare products and a follow-up assessment.

  • Most clients enjoy their results for 4–6 years, with an easy refresher when the pigment softens.

  • Consultations are free and confidential, by phone or in person if you're local to Toowoomba.

What is scalp micropigmentation?

SMP is a specialised scalp tattoo. Tiny, carefully placed pigment deposits are built up across the scalp to mimic the look of natural hair follicles. Done well, it doesn't look like a tattoo at all. It just looks like hair.

Every treatment is customised to your hair type, skin tone and lifestyle. SMP is a cosmetic treatment: it doesn't regrow hair or treat the cause of hair loss. If your hair loss is new or changing quickly, it's worth checking in with your GP first.

SMP can help if you're dealing with:

  • male pattern baldness or a receding hairline

  • crown thinning or overall diffuse thinning

  • female hair thinning or a widening part line

  • scarring from injury, surgery or a hair transplant

  • alopecia areata or totalis

  • patchy beards or gaps in facial hair

The three SMP options at a glance

There's no "one size fits all" with SMP, so we've grouped it into three options. Knowing roughly where you fit helps you go into your consult feeling more informed.

Density

Hairline recreation

Scar & donor area camouflage

Best for

A natural head of hair that's thinning, or a small bald spot

A receding or uneven hairline (men or women), or baldness

Scars from an injury, surgery or hair transplant

What it does

Adds pigment between existing hairs so less scalp shows through

Creates a custom-designed hairline and, if needed, a full shaved look across the whole head

Blends pigment into and around the scar so it matches the surrounding hair

Good to know

Suits men and women; no shaving needed; matched to your hair colour and skin tone

Your hairline is mapped and pencilled on first so you can see the shape

Custom pigment for a close match; can also enhance a previous transplant

Option 1: Density treatments

Density SMP is for people who still have a natural head of hair but want the look of thicker hair, or have a small bald spot they'd like disguised. Pigment is added between your existing hairs so the scalp shows through less, and the whole area reads as fuller.

Density treatments:

  • add subtle, natural fullness to thinning areas

  • are customised to match your hair colour and skin tone

  • can help create a more youthful, well-defined hairline

  • suit both men and women who want to boost hair density

No shaving needed. Density SMP doesn't require you to shave or cut your hair. It can be left exactly as it is, whether it's short or long, and that includes women with longer hair. For women, Jason uses delicate techniques to improve part-line definition and fill in diffuse thinning.

Density SMP can also be a great option for women experiencing postpartum hair loss (hair loss after pregnancy).

Option 2: Hairline recreation

Hairline recreation is for anyone, men or women, with a receding or uneven hairline, or for those who are bald or close to it and want a full, closely shaved look across the whole head.

Jason designs each hairline to suit your face and features, so it looks like it belongs to you, not like a template. Before any pigment goes in, the hairline is mapped out and pencilled onto your head so you can see and approve the shape first.

Hairline recreation:

  • gives you a custom-designed hairline that suits your features

  • can be an undetectable, whole-head solution for baldness

  • blends seamlessly with your existing hair

  • suits receding or uneven hairlines

  • is a long-lasting way to feel and look your best

Option 3: Scar and donor area camouflage

If you've had a hair transplant, you may have a linear scar or a thinned-out donor area at the back of the head. Scars from injuries or surgery can also leave patches where hair doesn't grow.

Camouflage SMP places pigment into and around the scar so it blends in with the surrounding hair, creating a fuller, more balanced look. SMP can also enhance the visual result of a previous hair transplant.

Camouflage treatments:

  • effectively conceal scars from hair transplants or injuries

  • use custom pigment for a close match with surrounding hair

  • create a fuller, balanced look in the donor area

  • give you a lasting, confidence-boosting result

Scars need 3–6 months of healing before they can be treated. Scar tissue can take pigment differently to the surrounding skin, which is why every camouflage treatment is assessed and customised at your consultation.

Not sure which one you are? That's what the consult is for

Plenty of people are a mix. You might want a sharper hairline plus some density on top, or a donor scar covered plus fullness through the crown. That's completely normal, and it's exactly what Jason will talk through with you.

  1. Book your free SMP consult by filling in the enquiry form on our Book page.

  2. We'll send you a text to find a time to give you a call.

  3. We'll usually ask you to text through a few photos of your area of concern, so we understand what you need.

  4. If you're local to Toowoomba, you're welcome to come in for an in-person consultation, where we'll explain the process, answer your questions and give you advice.

“If we genuinely don't think we can help you achieve what you're after, we will always try to refer you to someone who we believe can assist you better.” — Our promise to every SMP client

What to expect: sessions, step by step

A typical SMP package is 2–3 sessions. Building the pigment up gradually is what makes the result look soft and realistic rather than flat.

  1. Initial consultation. A personalised, no-pressure chat to assess your needs. You'll be walked through your treatment plan, pigment selection and pre-care advice.

  2. First session. Jason maps your new hairline and applies the foundational layer of pigment, focusing on placement and spacing to replicate real hair follicles.

  3. Second and third sessions. Each is spaced 7–10 days apart to allow healing. Density and detail are built up gradually, with adjustments to colour, shape and coverage for a balanced, natural result.

  4. Final review. Once you've healed, Jason reviews the outcome and does any final touch-ups needed.

Does it hurt? SMP is considered a low-discomfort treatment. You may feel a mild pricking sensation, but most clients find it manageable, especially compared to a traditional tattoo. Jason's clients often fall asleep.

Do you use numbing cream? No. Numbing isn't needed for SMP, and applying it can affect the outcome of your treatment.

Downtime: there's no downtime, and most people go back to work the same day.

How to prepare for your SMP appointment

A little prep makes a real difference to how well your scalp takes the pigment and how evenly it heals. Here's what we ask:

  1. 1–2 weeks before: protect your scalp from the sun. Keep your head covered in strong sun, especially if you burn easily. A sunburnt scalp is sensitive and doesn't take pigment well, so we may need to reschedule.

  2. The week before: moisturise and gently exfoliate. Use a water-based moisturiser on your scalp daily, and a light scrub to clear dead skin. If you have dandruff, eczema, psoriasis or a dry, flaky scalp, get it settled first.

  3. At least 7 days before: give your scalp a break from wigs or hair systems. This lets any irritation from adhesive clear up.

  4. Tell us about your health at your consultation. If you take blood-thinning medication, it needs to have finished at least 30 days before treatment; speak with your doctor before changing any prescribed medication. If you have type 2 diabetes or have had chemotherapy in the last 12 months, we'll need a doctor's clearance. If you're prone to keloid scarring or your hair loss is still actively changing, SMP may not be right for you yet.

  5. 24 hours before: skip alcohol and caffeine. Both can thin the blood and affect how well the pigment holds.

  6. The night before (only if you already keep a shaved look): clip, don't razor. If you wear your head shaved, clip it right down with clippers or a trimmer rather than a razor, unless Jason has asked you to leave it for him. Having density SMP? There's no need to shave or cut. Leave your hair exactly as it is.

  7. On the day: arrive with a clean scalp and a full stomach. Wash with a gentle, fragrance-free shampoo, and leave off fibres, thickening sprays, styling products and minoxidil. Have a meal before you come in.

Healing and aftercare

SMP aftercare is simple, but it matters. Your skin heals over about 3–5 days, and the pigment takes 7–10 days to fully settle. Every SMP package includes your aftercare products, and here's how to look after your scalp after each session:

  1. Days 1–4: keep it dry. No shampoo, soap or washing your scalp, and don't point the shower at your head (a shower cap helps). If you need to freshen up, gently wipe with clean hands or a damp paper towel. Avoid anything that makes you sweat heavily, including the gym, and keep out of strong sun.

  2. Days 1–5: loose hats only. A loose cap or work hard hat is fine, but skip beanies and tight hats that rub or make you sweat.

  3. Days 5–7: gentle washing. From day 5 you can wash your head again with warm water and a mild cleanser such as baby shampoo. No scrubbing. Pat dry and follow with a light water-based moisturiser or a light oil like jojoba. If you keep your head shaved, don't shave the treated area yet (clippers are fine from day 8).

  4. Days 8–14: let it finish settling. Don't pick or scratch any flaking (tap gently if it's itchy). If you shave, avoid a razor for 10 days after each session. Hold off on hair colours, fibres, makeup, medicated creams, minoxidil and retinoids until at least 10 days after your final session.

  5. For 3 weeks: no swimming or steam. Avoid chlorinated pools, the ocean, saunas and steam rooms.

  6. Day 15 onwards: back to normal. You can return to your usual routine.

Activity

When it's OK again

Washing your scalp

From day 5, gently, with warm water and a mild cleanser

Gym and heavy sweating

After day 4

Tight hats and beanies

After day 5

Shaving (only if you keep your head shaved)

Clippers from day 8; razor after 10 days

Swimming, saunas and steam rooms

After 3 weeks

Fibres, colours, minoxidil, retinoids

At least 10 days after your final session

Strong sun

Wear a hat for the first 2 weeks and never let it burn; use SPF 50+ once healed

Long term: wear SPF 50+ or a hat on your scalp whenever you're out in the sun, exfoliate gently about twice a month, keep your scalp moisturised, and avoid products high in alcohol or containing AHAs. All of these fade pigment faster.

How long does SMP last?

Most clients enjoy their results for 4–6 years. Over time the pigment fades gently, which allows for easy refreshers to keep your look crisp. Lifestyle factors like sun exposure and skin type affect how quickly it softens, and in sunny Queensland good sun protection really helps.

SMP FAQs

Is SMP just for men? No. Jason recreates crisp hairlines and boosts thinning crowns for men, improves part-line definition and diffuse thinning for women, and camouflages alopecia and scarring. Every treatment is personalised.

How is SMP different from a hair transplant? A hair transplant physically moves hair follicles. SMP is non-surgical, lower cost and lower risk, shows results after each session and needs no pills or foams. It suits people who aren't transplant candidates, and it can also enhance a previous transplant.

Do I have to shave my head? Not for density SMP. Your hair can be left exactly as it is, long or short, for men and women. If you're having hairline recreation for a full, closely shaved look, you'll keep your head shaved to show it off.

Will my SMP turn blue or green? No. Jason uses specialised SMP pigments designed not to discolour. They fade slowly over several years but won't turn blue or green.

How many sessions will I need? A typical package is 2–3 sessions, spaced 7–10 days apart, followed by a review once you've healed.

I live outside Toowoomba. Can I still come? Yes. We're at 144 Campbell Street, Toowoomba, and see clients from across the Darling Downs, South West QLD, Brisbane, the Gold Coast, the Sunshine Coast and interstate. Your first consult can be done by phone.
